Speaker Byrd Stands Up for Florida Small Businesses

Byrd Appoints Select Committee on Florida’s Economic Future

Names District 5 Rep. Don Brown (R) as Chair

PLANT CITY – Fighting to ensure the strength of Florida’s small businesses and working families, House Speaker Johnnie Byrd announced today opposition to State Senate proposals that would increases taxes for Floridians.

“I will not support new taxes, increases in old taxes, or a state income tax.  We are going to live within our means,” said Speaker Byrd. “My colleagues in the House and I share common-sense, low tax, economic growth ideas that will help Florida’s small businesses prosper.”

Speaker Byrd goes on to state his opposition to the State Senate’s economic proposals that call for a 20% increase in the budget and a 50% increase in discretionary spending. “All totaled, the Senate is considering an $11.1 Billion tax increase, one of the largest in Florida’s history and one that will cost working families their jobs.” said the Speaker.

Additionally, in efforts to carry out his mission, Speaker Byrd named Florida State Rep. Don Brown, DeFuniak Springs Republican, as the chair of his Select Committee on Florida’s Economic Future.

“This Select Committee will be taking testimony from constituents around the state. The concerns and suggestions of Florida’s working families will be instrumental as we seek to develop a plan for Florida’s future,” said Byrd. “I will be looking for this Select Committee and Rep. Don Brown to develop an action plan that will help ensure the strength and stability of our states’ economic future.”

Rep. Don Brown commented that he is very proud to have been chosen by the Speaker to help lead in his efforts. Said Brown, “The State of Florida is one of only three states in the U.S. that is operating in the Black. We do not have a revenue problem we have a spending problem. And I am not receptive to additional tax increases on working men and women or our senior savers.”
