Literacy Volunteers of Washington County receives $75,000 DOE grant The Literacy Volunteers of Washington County in collaboration with the Washington County Public Library has received a 2-year $75,000 Adult and Family Literacy Grant from the Department of Education. The grant is administered through Florida A&M University. The three main stipulations attached to the grant require that the LVWC program, coordinated by Outreach Specialist Debbie Waugh, have 117 adults and children enrolled in the program within two years; that the program coordinate at least 5 career placements during that time frame; and produce at least three students who obtain a GED as a result of their program involvement. The grant will also help pay (when applicable) for fuel costs ($10-a-week vouchers) and pay two half-days of childcare at an approved, licensed daycare facility for students enrolled in the program, in addition to providing vouchers for the cost of the student’s GED test. The grant also stipulates that LVWC must collaborate with 10 local service agencies. Waugh says that she is already working with five office volunteers and tutors as a result of collaboration with local service agencies. She points out that Patent Literacy, Family Literacy, and Adult Literacy are the main elements of the grant, and that 95% of the grant must be used for instructional activities with the other five percent being used for administrative costs. The LVWC currently has 50 student enrollments and the LVWC recently became a member of the Pro-Literacy Worldwide – a new organization formed with the merger of Laubach Literacy and Literacy Volunteers of America. ...In 1999 Governor Jeb Bush decreed that Calhoun, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, and Washington are designated as Rural Areas of Critical Economic Concern. ...The grant is to help families address poverty related problems such as inter-generational illiteracy. ...Panhandle Families as Educators is a two-year project that provides services that are intended to provide sufficient intensity in terms of hours, and of sufficient duration, to make a sustainable literacy impact in a family. ...Will use traditional and technology based instruction. ...Project Administrator is Dr. Patricia Walker-McGill, Director of the Institute of Urban Policy and Commerce.
